Plan Your Butcher Holler Tour

Walk in the footsteps of a legend — tour the cabin where Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle grew up, just outside Van Lear, KY. From the hand-washed clothes on the line to the original bed her mother once made, this is more than a tour — it’s a story.

Loretta Lynn Butcher Holler Cabin

The Butcher Holler Experience

Tucked into the hills of Johnson County, just north of Pikeville, Butcher Holler is more than just a destination — it’s the birthplace of one of country music’s most beloved icons. Visit the childhood cabin of Loretta Lynn and her sister Crystal Gayle and take in the sights and stories that shaped the Coal Miner’s Daughter.

Inside the cabin, you'll find Loretta’s mother’s washboard, vintage family furnishings, and authentic memorabilia. Tours are guided by local historians and members of the Webb family — the same family that helped raise Loretta and still operates Webb’s General Store next door.

Don’t Miss Webb’s Grocery Store

Group Travelers with Loretta's Family

Just a short walk from the cabin tour is Webb’s General Store, a former coal camp company store that’s been lovingly preserved and maintained by Loretta Lynn’s family. It’s a time capsule of Appalachian life — a place where local miners once picked up everything from flour to work boots, often using coal scrip instead of cash. Today, the store offers a rich selection of authentic memorabilia including autographed photos, vintage-style t-shirts, and collectibles tied to Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, and other regional icons.

Webb’s isn’t just a gift shop — it’s a living part of the story. You can sip an RC Cola while enjoying a MoonPie, just like the miners of decades past. The walls are filled with photographs, antiques, and historic signage that bring to life the traditions of coal country. Whether you’re picking up a souvenir or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Webb’s General Store is a highlight of the Butcher Holler experience.

A Tour Through Time

Your journey doesn’t end at the cabin. Along the path, you’ll pass the site of the original one-room schoolhouse where young Loretta and her siblings were educated. The structure is no longer standing, but the location is marked — and stories of her school days are often shared during the tour. Nearby, you’ll also find the entrance to the coal mine where Loretta’s father, Melvin “Ted” Webb, once worked to support his family. Seeing this mine entrance brings the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” story full circle, grounding it in the labor and legacy of Eastern Kentucky’s mining heritage.
